Illness from Surfing in Costa Rica

We were surfing for a month on the Nicoya Peninsula, Santa Teresa, a few years ago and I ended up with a lung infection followed by hives on my legs and flu like symptoms upon returning home. There was heavy red tide when we were surfing there which my doctor thinks may have caused some or all of my symptoms.
